UNITED NATIONS, April 29 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday reiterated his strong condemnation of the April 22 terrorist attack that took place in Jammu and Kashmir, his spokesman said.

The UN chief spoke separately by telephone with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shebaz Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Tuesday, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, at a daily briefing.

"In his phone calls, the Secretary-General reiterated his strong condemnation of the April 22 terrorist attack that took place in Jammu and Kashmir. The Secretary-General noted the importance of pursuing justice and accountability for these attacks through lawful means," he said.

Guterres also expressed his deep concern at the rising tensions between India and Pakistan and underscored the need to avoid a confrontation that could result in tragic consequences, said the spokesman.

The UN chief offered his good offices to support any de-escalation efforts, Dujarric added.

At least 25 people were killed and several others wounded on April 22 after unknown gunmen fired at them in the Indian-controlled Kashmir, Indian media reported.
